Time for a tune-up?

Some vehicle sounds are no big deal, while others can be a sign of something more. Be sure to let your GMC Certified Service Experts at Wheaton Buick GMC Ltd. know if you’re experiencing any of the following.

SQUEALS


A loud squeal on acceleration could be a sign of a loose or worn accessory drive belt, which helps power key vehicle components. If squealing persists, especially when your vehicle is just warming up, see your GMC Certified Service experts. If replacement is necessary, your timing belt could also need replacement (if equipped). An engine can be seriously damaged by timing belt failure, making it extra important to stay on top of manufacturer-recommended replacement intervals.

CHIRPING


If a high-pitched chirping noise disrupts your travels, brake pads could be the culprit. Many GMC vehicles come equipped with a small, thin metal tab attached to the brake pad to act as a warning indicator when the pad’s friction material – the key element in helping slow and stop your vehicle, is worn and needs replacing. When this tab makes contact with the brake rotor, it could make a chirping noise on brake application, letting you know it’s time to ask your Service advisor about a new set of brake pads or other brake system work.  Some GMC vehicles may be equipped with a brake pad life monitoring system that will display the amount of brake pad left.

SQUEAKS


Should you hear squeaking, your vehicle’s bushings may be the culprit. Bushings are the most common joints in a suspension system and can squeak if the rubber tears or dries out. Squeaking can also occur when a suspension component starts to rotate inside the metal sleeve of a broken bushing, or of a bushing that’s been torqued incorrectly. WHINING


If you notice whining, a transmission issue could be the cause. A failing transmission pump, for example, whines in all gears and is directly proportionate to vehicle speed. As this is just one of several potential causes of a persistent whine, visit us for a specific diagnosis. 

HUMMING OR ROARING


Noises such as humming or roaring could indicate a wheel bearing issue. If you notice any of these sounds in combination with steering wheel shake, or other vibrations, have your vehicle’s wheel bearings inspected by one of our Certified Service Experts.
