Prepare For Your Summer Road Trip

Temperature: up. Sun: out. Road: open. Yes, summer is here. But before you head out on that epic road trip, there are a few things you can do to help make sure your GMC is ready to help you make the most of your journey.

1. Proper engine oil maintenance is important all year round. But before heading to the beach or the mountains, be sure to check the oil in your GMC. Most GMC vehicles are equipped with an engine Oil Life Monitor, which helps determine when it’s time for a change. But especially before a road trip, it’s a good idea to double check your vehicle’s dipstick. On level ground, turn the engine off, wait at least 15 minutes (or 30 if the engine isn’t warm), and make sure your GMC’s oil level is within the range recommended in its Owner’s Manual.

2. To fully enjoy the season’s scenic views, make sure your wiper blades are functioning as they should. Rubber can deteriorate from the harshness of direct summer sun. And it’s possible the blades on your GMC may not have recovered from winter snow, ice and salt. If you notice worn or split rubber, bent frames, chattering, skipping, or squeaking, ask your Certified Service technician to recommend and install the right blades for your GMC. It’s a simple way to help keep you in command of the road ahead, and primed to enjoy the sights of summer.

3. You may have chosen your GMC for its towing capability, and summer is prime time for pulling. Before hitching up and heading out, make sure your brakes are ready to handle the stress of stopping hundreds or thousands of pounds. The added weight of a boat or camper also requires properly inflated tires with plenty of tread. If you have any doubt that your brakes or tires are up to the task, consult our GMC Certified Service experts, who can also make sure your GMC is equipped with the hitch appropriate for your level of summer fun.

4. An automatic car wash can help your GMC look its best for your summer road trip. But tackling the job yourself is an easy way to perfect your tan while making sure your truck looks just as good. Choose a soap specifically formulated for automotive paint to avoid stripping away protective wax layers. Using two separate buckets for washing and rinsing and starting the job from the roof down to the wheels will help prevent grit, gravel and stones from scratching the paint. And if it’s time to apply a new wax layer, make sure to do so out of direct sunlight, which will also help preserve the paint finish.

5. The start of road trip season is a great time to take stock of overall vehicle maintenance needs.
