Hot off the heels of parent company Chevrolet’s big reveal of their new Colorado small pickup, GMC is following suit by releasing an all-new version of their Canyon.
Not much has been said about the new 2023 Canyon just yet, but what they have shown is what looks like a much chunkier take on the model complete with squared-off corners, large grille and new headlights that are adopting the dual-tier style seen on the latest Sierra full-size truck.
What GMC has said is that there will be a new AT4X Edition 1 package, likely a graphics upgrade with a few performance bits thrown in for good measure. It comes by it honestly, having undergone rigorous testing in the off-roader’s paradise that is Moab, Utah. If the Canyon’s Sierra AT4X big brother is any indication, the AT4X will be the most capable off-roading Canyon ever, you can count on that.
If its Colorado cousin is any indication, meanwhile, expect a longer wheelbase than previous and a wider stance as well.
Powertrain figures have not yet been announced, but don’t be surprised if the choices are a little less numerous than previous; the Colorado gets a single 2.7-litre four-cylinder turbo available in three different states of tune, so expect a similar circumstance when it comes to the Canyon.
That means 237 horsepower and 259 pound-feet of torque at base, going all the way up to over 300 hp and over 40 lb-ft on higher trims. That power figure more than makes up for the loss of the previous truck’s V6 option, though the diesel version that also existed will be missed by those who favour the towing capabilities of their truck above all else.
The all-new 2023 GMC Canyon will make its official debut soon, and we’ll be sure to get the lowdown on it once it does. Until then, sit tight and watch this space!
