The Sierra is taking over the beginning of the decade with class-leading features in key areas. Canadian light duty truck owners are also turning to the Sierra more than ever because of its great entry MSRP, masterful towing capability, engine options and efficiency. These qualities have made many light-duty pickup manufacturers nervous about the Sierra’s new standards. Here, we compare how the Sierra measures up the 2020 Toyota Tundra.
The 2020 GMC Sierra has an accessible price
The Sierra is one of the most accessible light-duty trucks in the industry with a starting MSRP as low as $32,498. Compare that to the Tundra’s starting MSRP of $40,650. You can upgrade to a well-equipped 4x4 Sierra Double Cab and add more options for the equivalent of the Tundra’s starting MSRP.
Superior fuel economy, engine choices and innovations drive the 2020 GMC Sierra
The Tundra includes one engine—a 5.7L eight cylinder with 381 horsepower. Although some may prefer a simple option, it drives up the cost of ownership. Many buyers will be stuck with too much engine that is too inefficient. Here, the engine’s fuel consumption rates are as high as 18.0/14.2 L/100 km. You may think twice about taking a Tundra on errands across town.
The Sierra offers several engines to align the unique needs of light truck customers. One size rarely fits all. Two new advanced engines for 2020 feature the 10-speed 6.2L Ecotec3 eight—cylinder engine that outputs 420 horsepower and 466 lb-ft of torque. If you want to cut the Tundra’s fuel consumption by nearly half, then the Sierra’s new 10-speed Duramax Turbo Diesel 3.0L achieves fuel efficiency rating of 10.2/7.2 L/100 km (city/highway) while generating 277 hp with 420 lb-ft of torque.
Other Sierra engines include a 355 hp 5.3L eight-cylinder available in six, eight and 10 speeds; a 285 hp 4.3 L six-speed six cylinder; and a six-speed with the 310 hp four-cylinder turbocharged engine.
The Sierra’s Max Trailering Package pushes the 6.2L Ecotec engine to pull a class-leading 12,100 lbs. Aside from the Tundra, that’s more than what the F-150 and other leading light-duty pickups can handle.
Inside, the 2020 GMC Sierra offers more technology, like the 15-inch head-up display and rear camera mirror.
